Adding warmth to your home: Which flooring is best?

Getting out of bed on a frosty winter’s morning can be difficult enough as it is, without the added deterrent of a cold floor against your bare feet. Choosing the right type of flooring can instantly improve the comfort levels inside your property, creating a warm, inviting space for you and your visitors to enjoy.

Carpet

Carpet

Carpets are widely considered the warmest type of flooring, as they provide a blanket-like surface to keep your feet warm in different rooms throughout your home.

Not only that, their fibres are natural insulators which help to keep the warmth inside your home, without it escaping through the material.

Rugs

Rugs

If the cost of having carpets fitted throughout your home is too much, rugs are a great alternative. They can help your feet feel warmer and will block off draughts coming in through the floor.

Vinyl, LVTs and Lino

Vinyl, LVTs and Lino

Although vinyl flooring is cooler on bare feet than carpet, it provides a warmer, more comfortable surface than natural stone or ceramic flooring. It’s worth noting that the thicker your vinyl flooring is, the softer and warmer it will feel underfoot.

Luxury vinyl tiles and good quality lino are designed to replicate the look and texture of real wood or stone flooring, with the added benefit of improved heat insulation when combined with underlay.

Wood

Wood

Although wood is colder to walk on barefooted than carpet, there are still options available to you. As previously mentioned, rugs can be a great addition in homes with wooden floors as they provide a warm carpet-like surface underfoot.

As opposed to solid wood, engineered wooden flooring is compatible with underfloor heating systems, making it ideally suited to your kitchen, living room or conservatory.

Laminate

Laminate

Similar to wood, laminate is not known for its heat-saving qualities. As such, laying a rug will help to create a warm surface underfoot.

Most laminate flooring is suitable for use with underfloor heating, however it’s worth checking its compatibility with the manufacturer prior to installation.

Laminate

Underlay

For added comfort and insulation, underlay offers the ideal solution.

A thick layer of underlay fitted underneath your carpet or laminate flooring will instantly improve its thermal insulating capabilities for a warmer, cosier surface underfoot.

It’s worth noting that some styles of thicker vinyl flooring may be suitable without underlay.
